Gentle Ben
Gentle Ben is the coming-of-age story of a boy living in a fishing community in Alaska in the 1950’s. Eleven-year old Mark befriends a bear, Ben, who is owned by a local man who mistreats the bear. Although initially afraid of Ben, Mark’s parents warm up to Ben and allow Mark to adopt Ben as his own pet. The two have a happy and carefree spring, summer and fall together. Trouble comes in the winter, though, and Mark and Ben are separated. The story doesn’t end there, though! Some lost animals do find their way back ‘home’.
